Good old days lost in shoe boxes

In the good old days, our old folks used to save their hard earned money in biscuit tins, shoe boxes or even paper bags and hide them under the bed or in the ceiling. Some even dig holes in their garden and bury the old tins into the holes. Some even go to the extent of marking an ‘X' on the spot fearing that their memories may fail them and they forget where they buried their ‘treasures'. Some old ladies even stuffed their money into their pillows or into their mattresses.

This is understandable because in the good old days there were not many proper facilities available, convenient and inexpensive to give assurance of safekeeping. But is this a good way to keep their valuables? Will they have peace of mind? Saving money is good, but is this a proper way to keep their money? The answer is no. The proper thing to do would have been to keep their money in the bank. But banks were few and far between, and foreboding, back then. And in the minds of the old folks, there is perhaps the fear that such places are targets for robbery.

If the old folks do not keep their money and valuables properly, these can get lost or stolen and they will not have peace of mind. Some of them are even reluctant to leave their houses for fear that their ‘treasures' might be stolen.

There are many cases of children discarding the old biscuit tins and shoeboxes of their grandmothers, little knowing that they are throwing away family heirlooms or valuable documents. Some even burn the tattered pillows or leave these behind when shifting house. Just imagine the anguish of these people watching their money and important documents disappear or going up in smoke.

Similarly, some people have written a Will, leaving their hard earned assets to their loved ones. Just like the good old days, they just keep the Will in the house. This is not a good move and a bad decision. Having no safe and secure place to keep the Will, is as good as not having a Will at all. If the Will is not kept securely, it can be tampered with, eaten away by silverfish, accidentally destroyed or even get lost. Some people even keep their Wills in secret hiding places outside the house that no one can ever find. When they pass away, the secret will also die with them and the family members will not be able to find the Will. If the Will cannot be found, then they cannot apply for the Grant of Probate. This will create a lot of unnecessary problems, delays in administering the estate and additional costs more for the family.

If your Will cannot be found because you have hidden it in a secret hiding place where your loved ones cannot find it, and distribution of your assets are not in accordance with your wishes, no one can hear your voice of disapproval from the other side. So make sure your Will is safe, tamper proof and well kept in a place that your loved ones are aware of. This will ensure that the instructions contained within them can be executed to protect the future of your loved ones and make your wishes come true.
